Widerøe Dash 8-100 Conducts World's First GPS SCAT-1 Approach
Flight International reports that a passenger-carrying Widerøe Bombardier Dash 8-100 was the first to fly an approach using the world's only certificated GNSS (global navigation satellite system) precision approach system on October 29, at a remote airport in Norway.  Widerøe is a SAS subsidiary.

R&D Design Services to Represent Max-Viz EVS
R&D Design Services (RDDS), of Margate, Kent, U.K., has agreed to represent Portland, Oregon-based Max-Viz and its EVS (enhanced vision system).  RDDS provides vision-enhanced airborne surveillance systems to civil, police and military organizations worldwide.

Avionica says SITA has qualified its Iridium satellite-based data communications module for use on the SITA ACARS (aircraft communications addressing and reporting system) network.

ARINC says there's been what it calls "a recent sharp increase in the demand for Iridium services by airlines worldwide, and a similar jump in the volume of its monthly Iridium traffic."

 

FAA Issues Final Rule on Aircraft Fuel-Tank Safety
The FAA has issued a new rule designed to enhance the safety requirements for design, installation and maintenance of electrical wiring in new and existing airplane designs.  In addition, it moves existing rules on wiring into a single section of the regulations, and adds new certification standards to address wire degradation and inadequate design or maintenance.

FAA Exceeds Its Goal for Reducing the Most Serious Runway Incursions
The FAA says it exceeded its goal for reducing the most serious runway incursions by 25% in its FY (fiscal year) 2007, but concedes it needs to do more.

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) awarded Smiths Detection a US$21 million contract for a new-technology X-ray machine that can automatically detect explosives and liquids at passenger checkpoints.

The Aircraft Electronics Association and Texas State Technical College (TSTC) are offering 10 new scholarships to persons wanting to pursue an associate degree in avionics.

Mitsubishi Picks Rockwell Collins Avionics for New Regional Jet
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has selected Rockwell Collins' Pro Line Fusion avionics suite for its new Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ). Rockwell will also serve as the avionics system integrator for the MRJ program.
