China Will Conduct Its First ADS-B Commercial Aviation Trial
The Air Traffic Management Bureau of the Civil Aviation Administration of China will deploy Sensis Corporation's ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance - broadcast) at two airports as part of China's first formal trial of ADS-B, based on 1090 Mode S, in preparation for a nationwide deployment of the technology.

Alaskan GA Pilots Using Harris OASIS for Flight Planning and Briefings
FAA air traffic control specialists in Alaska are now using integrated weather briefing and flight planning technology developed by Harris Corporation to assist general aviation pilots with flight planning. The system is operational at 17 FSS (flight service stations) and AFSS (automated flight service stations) across the state.

Eurowing is equipping its new fleet of CRJ700s with Rockwell Collins' HGS (head-up guidance systems).  Deliveries of the aircraft to Eurowing began last month.

The FAA has granted Max-Viz a STC (supplemental type certificate) for installation of its EVS-1000 series EVS (enhanced vision system) on Cessna Citation 500s.

QinetiQ Demonstrates New Low-Visibility Technology for Helicopter Pilots
QinetiQ has successfully flight trialed an integrated flight-guidance technology meant to provide helicopter pilots with imaging information in low visibility conditions.

Horizon Air Using HGS for Lower Landing Minimums at Great Falls
The FAA approved Horizon Air's use of its Rockwell Collins HGS (head-up guidance system) at Great Falls, Montana, which allows the airline to take advantage of the airport's new Category III landing minimums.

 

FAA to Accelerate Deployment of Technology to Prevent Runway Incursions
Acting FAA Administrator Bobby Sturgell said the agency plans to accelerate the introduction of ASDE-X (airport surface detection equipment - model X), by deploying the technology at the 35 largest U.S. airports by 2010, instead of 2011 as originally planned.

Fatal GA Accidents Down 5%; Technology a Positive Factor
The number of fatal general aviation accidents declined by 5% during the twelve months ending September 30th, the FAA reported.  Modern technology was given some of the credit.

 

Sydney Airport to Use Sensis Wide Area Multilateration
Airservices Australia has selected Sensis Corporation's WAM (wide area multilateration) for terminal airspace surveillance and precision approach monitoring at Sydney.

Hong Kong to Trial Barco's Arrival Management Software
Hong Kong's Civil Aviation Department (CAD) will evaluate Barco's AMS (arrival metering and sequencing) application for a six-month trial period.  The system will be installed by the end of this year.

Airports Want Study on How New Procedures Could Mitigate Noise
Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) Executive Vice President, Policy and External Affairs, Deborah C. McElroy, recently urged Congress to consider funding a study on how new flight procedures could mitigate airport noise.

 

Northrop Grumman's Airliner Missile Defense Achieves 12,000 Operating Hours
Northrop Grumman says its Guardian counter-MANPADS (man portable air defense system) has achieved 12,000 on-aircraft operational hours, on more than 2,500 revenue service flights. It's currently installed on nine wide-body aircraft flying in commercial revenue service.

 

L-3 Appoints Kris Ganase President of Aviation Products
L-3 Communications named Kris Ganase to a newly created position of President of Aviation Products within the corporation's Products Group.  Mr. Ganase will report to Charles J. Schafer, the president and chief operating officer of L-3's Products Group.

ATR selected Thales to provide the avionics suite for its new ATR 42-600 and ATR 72-600 aircraft.  Thales will be the tier-one systems integrator for the aircraft's cockpits and will integrate components provided by other suppliers.
