Six More Airlines Join Eurocontrol's ADS-B Trials
Six more airlines have joined Eurocontrol's ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast) Pioneer Airlines Project meant to help operators obtain airworthiness approval for their existing ADS-B equipment.

Eurocontrol Offering Air-Ground Communications Safety Toolkit
Eurocontrol has launched a new toolkit meant to reduce the number of runway incursions and flight level "busts" (failure to level off at assigned altitudes) by improving air-ground communications.

DOT IG Says U.S. ADS-B Implementation "Faces Myriad of Risks"
The Department of Transportation's Inspector General Calvin L. Scovel III told Congress that the widespread introduction of ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast) in the U.S. "faces a myriad of risks," which could materially affect its cost, schedule, and expected benefits.

AirCell Expects to Offer Cockpit Datalink Services By Year's End
AirCell expects to offer a new DIU (data interface unit) by the end of the year that will allow its customers to use their existing AirCell satellite communications system to obtain datalinked information in the cockpit from two compatible third-party providers.

 

NTSB Recommending Overwater Safety Devices for Some Helicopters
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is recommending that the FAA require all existing and new turbine-powered helicopters operating in the Gulf of Mexico and certificated with five or more seats be equipped with externally mounted life rafts that are large enough to accommodate all occupants.

NTSB Chairman Reiterates Interest in Cargo Airline Safety
U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chairman Mark V. Rosenker has reiterated his agency's continuing interest in cargo airline safety, particularly regarding inflight fire protection.

NTSB Cites Wide Range of Safety Issues in Unmanned Aircraft Accident
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued 22 safety recommendations, following its first investigation of an accident involving an unmanned aircraft (UA), to address what Chairman Mark V. Rosenker described as "a wide range of safety issues."

NTSB Provides More Details on Landing Distance Safety Recommendations
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has made seven more specific recommendations to the FAA regarding landing distance assessments following the release of its findings on the B-737 landing overrun accident at Chicago's Midway in December 2005.

 

Southwest to Install GE Aviation FMS on B-737 Classics
Southwest Airlines has awarded GE Aviation, formerly Smiths Aerospace, a contract to provide a FMS (flight management system) upgrade for 200 B-737 Classics in order to accommodate its plans for RNP (required navigation performance).  Deliveries of the new systems will take place in 2008 and 2009.

 

Vaisala's Latest Lightning Warning System Soon to Be Operational
Vaisala is making available its third-generation automated lightning threat identification and warning system, which it expects to have operational at 11 airports in the U.S., Canada and Thailand, by the end of this year.

 

Naverus Names Steve Forte COO
Naverus has named Steve Forte to be its chief operating officer, effective November 1.  Captain Forte was most recently United Airlines' senior vice president of flight operations.
