Alaska Airlines to Launch Satellite-Based Broadband with Row 44
Alaska Airlines plans to launch onboard wireless Internet service using Row 44's satellite-based broadband connectivity.  The airline will test Row 44's system on a B-737NG aircraft in spring 2008 and, based on the trial's outcome, plans to equip its entire 114-aircraft fleet.

Rockwell Collins Offering Programmable Switch Panels for Business Jet Cabins
Rockwell Collins is introducing a new line of software-programmable switch panels to provide business-jet passengers more and easier control over their cabin environment.  The new line of switch panels, which will be available in summer of 2008, will also give aircraft manufacturers a standard part that can serve multiple applications.

Virgin America and AirCell Partnering on U.S. Broadband Communications
Virgin America and AirCell are partnering to offer in-flight broadband Internet services over the continental U.S. sometime in 2008.  The new service will allow Virgin America's passengers to connect using either Virgin' onboard entertainment system or their own Wi-Fi enabled laptops, smartphones, PDAs (personal digital assistants), BlackBerrys and portable gaming systems.

 

ENSCO's Weather Visualization Tools Available to Flight Explorer Users
ENSCO says users of Flight Explorer's flight tracking and decision-support tools have access to its suite of weather visualization tools and real-time global aviation weather data as well.  This is the same weather forecasting decision support system, used by ENSCO meteorologists to support United Airlines and other major carriers.

Henry Krakowski Named FAA ATO's New Chief Operating Officer
Captain Henry P. (Hank) Krakowski has been named the new chief operating officer of the FAA's ATO (air traffic organization).  He is scheduled to start his new position on October 1st.   He joins the agency after nearly 30 years at United Airlines where he was most recently the carrier's vice president of flight operations.  Previously, he was United's vice president of corporate safety, security and quality assurance.
