Sikorsky Asks Honeywell to Develop SVS for Black Hawk Helicopters
Honeywell will develop a SVS (synthetic vision system) for Sikorsky Aircraft's Black Hawk helicopter to help its pilots land in so-called brownout conditions, caused by blowing sand.   The work will be part of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Sandblaster program.

 

Airbus to Study Integrated ACSS Surveillance Offering on Some Models
Airbus has agreed to study the certification of ACSS's integrated TCAS (traffic alert and collision avoidance system), TAWS (terrain awareness warning system) and Mode-S transponder on the A320 and on the A330/A340 aircraft families.

Thales pronounced its Topflight Satcom ready for commercial use on Airbus' fleet of single-aisle passenger jets, following its successful testing during two five-hour flights across Europe.

EMS SATCOM Will Develop Broadband System for B-747-8
Rockwell Collins has selected EMS SATCOM to develop a satcom system for the new B-747-8 passenger and freighter models.

ARINC: VDL Mode 2 Now Has More Than 2,200 Aircraft User
ARINC says more than 2,200 individual aircraft use VDL (VHF digital link) Mode 2 datalink communications, about 2,000 of which are flown by 40 airlines and 200 by the military.  VDL Mode 2 usage has been rising sharply since 2004, according to ARINC.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has installed a Lockheed Martin Coherent Technologies Doppler lidar (laser imaging detection and ranging) system at the Tokyo International Airport, commonly known as Haneda.

Lufthansa Selects Thales/Smiths Aerospace FMS for New A340-600s
Lufthansa will install the Thales/Smiths Aerospace FMS (flight management system) on 39 of its single-aisle and long-range Airbus aircraft currently in service, plus all 42 of the new A320s, A330s and A340-600s it has recently ordered.  This decision follows the German carrier's determination last year to equip its new A340-600 fleet with the TopFlight system.

American Chooses IS&S to Modernize Its B-757 and 767 Cockpits
Innovative Solutions & Support (IS&S) will modernize the cockpits of American Airlines' fleet of nearly 200 Boeing 757/767 aircraft with new flat-panel display systems.  Deliveries will begin in the fourth quarter of this calendar year.
