DOT IG Says FAA "Faces Challenges" on NextGen Development
Lou E. Dixon, the U.S. Department of Transportation's assistant inspector general for aviation and special program audits, wrote in a recent report to Congress that the FAA "faces challenges" in developing NextGen, just as it does in completing existing modernization projects while maintaining existing facilities.

China Opens New Air Route to Europe
China has implemented a new route between Europe and Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong that will reduce distances up to 60 miles.

 

Alaska's Governor Signs Low-Interest Loan Bill for ADS-B

SAS to Outsource Voice Services to SITA
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will use SITA to provide all of its international voice telecommunication services for 800 users in 40 locations across 23 countries. The move is expected to reduce SAS's voice service contracts from over 100 to a single one with SITA, and save the airline $3.6 million (U.S.).

 

TSA Adding More Millimeter Wave Imaging Technology Trials
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will trial millimeter wave technology at Los Angeles and New York's Kennedy airports to evaluate its use in detecting weapons, explosives, and other concealed threat items on passengers, without having to make physical contact.  The system is already used at Phoenix Sky-Harbor.

U.S. Customs to Pilot International Registered Traveler Program
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will launch a pilot program this summer that uses biometric fingerprint technology to expedite the screening and processing of low-risk, frequent international "trusted" travelers entering the U.S.

 

HelicoptersNZ to Use SkyTrac Satcom and Flight Following
New Zealand's HelicoptersNZ has selected SkyTrac's satellite communication and flight following system to help manage its fleet of 39 helicopters that operate in remote offshore areas to support the oil industry.

 

Sensis ASDE-X Commissioned at Washington's Dulles
Washington Dulles has become the twelfth airport to get an operational Sensis' ASDE-X (airport surface detection equipment - model x) system. The FAA is deploying ASDE-X at 35 U.S. airports.
