FAA to Modify Rules for Use of Surface Moving Maps
FAA Administrator Marion Blakey announced that the FAA is going to modify its rules for using cockpit moving maps that
display the aircraft's GPS location on an airport.
Mercury Computer Nearing Completion of EFB with Synthetic Vision
Mercury Computer Systems
says it's nearing completion of a class-2 EFB (electronic flight bag) system
that will include synthetic vision capabilities.
New Flight Trials at Cairns to Demonstrate RNP Benefits
Airservices Australia has
commenced RNP (required navigation performance) navigation trials at Cairns
International Airport as a precursor to using the capabilities of modern
aircraft flight management systems to reduce fuel burn and its resulting
noise and emissions over the city.
FAA Designates Naverus as an RNP Approval Consultant
The FAA has designated
Naverus its first, and currently only, qualified consultant to help airlines
gain approval for RNP (required navigation performance) operations. |

The FAA has granted L2
Consulting Services a STC (supplemental type certificate) for its
installation of International Communications Group's Iridium satcom system
for B-757s.
Alliant Integrated Flight Deck Certified on King Air E90s and C90s
Avidyne Corporation and
S-TEC Corporation received an FAA STC (supplemental type certificate) for Alliant's integrated flight deck on King Air E90s and C90s.
FAA Certifies Alakai's Engine Trend Monitoring for Cirrus Models
The FAA issued a STC (supplemental type certificate) to Alakai Technologies Corporation for installing its ETMS
(engine trend monitoring system) on Cirrus SR20s and SR22s. The
certification also applies to Alakai's DFDS (digital flight data recording
system) software which, when combined with the ETMS, effectively provides
the aircraft with an inflight data recorder, currently not required on
aircraft with fewer than 10 seats. |

FCC Indicates It Will Continue Inflight Cell Phone Ban in U.S.
The chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission indicted in informal remarks that the FCC will
continue to disallow inflight cell phone use on airplanes. |

Caribbean Airlines will
use Boeing's Web-based Maintenance Performance Toolbox to help maintain its
fleet of seven B-737-800s.
