AVTECH says it has downlinked 4DT (3D plus time) strategic and tactical data to Eurocontrol from a simulator.  The achievement should accelerate the progress of moving to a future ATM (air traffic management) system that relies on highly accurate aircraft trajectory information.

Vietnam to use ADS and CPDLC on Some Routes
Vietnam's Thanh Nien Daily is reporting that Vietnam will soon use ADS (automatic dependent surveillance) and CPDLC (controller-pilot datalink communications) to exchange information with certain flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore over the East Sea.

MDA to Help FAA Develop New Instrument Procedures
The FAA has awarded MacDonald, Dettailer and Associates (MDA) a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract, with a ceiling of approximately $11.8 million to begin developing a new Instrument Procedure Development System (IPDS) to help improve civilian and military flight-route design practices, for both en-route and terminal airspace.

 

Harris Team Passes Milestone to Modernize FAA Telecommunications
A team led by Harris Corporation has brought online more than 10,000 communications services at more than 2,100 facilities as part of an FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) network program to "significantly" reduce operating costs.

 

Stockholm-Arlanda Airport to Deploy Sensis Surveillance System
Sweden's Luftfartsverket Air Navigation Services (LFV) will have Sensis integrate its MDS (multistatic dependent surveillance) system with Stockholm-Arlanda's existing SMGCS (surface movement guidance and control system) to improve the airport's ground traffic flow.

FAA Seeks to Encourage NGATS Equipage, But Will Mandate If Necessary
The FAA's associate administrator for aviation safety, Nicholas A. Sabatini, said last week that the agency's ADS-B Program Office will soon issue a NPRM (notice of proposed rule making) that would require aircraft to be equipped with ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast) avionics to assure access to certain U.S. airspace by 2020.

Europe to Validate Cockpit Traffic Situation Display Applications
Eurocontrol along with its partners Airbus, DSNA and Sofréavia, are commencing a project to evaluate the use of ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast) to display nearby traffic information to pilots in real time to improve their in-flight situational awareness.

 

EMTEQ's New STCs to Allow Retrofits on KC-10s, A300s and B767s
The FAA granted EMTEQ STCs (supplemental type certificates) for a dual Artex C406-N ELT (emergency locator transmitter) on KC-10s.  In addition, the Wisconsin-based system integrator is expecting approval from EASA for an ELT installation on A300s, and for an ELS/EHS (Mode S elementary/enhanced surveillance) upgrade on B-767-200/300s.

ARINC Awarded Patent for New Way of Collecting and Using Flight Data
ARINC has been awarded a U.S. patent (7149612) for improved methods of accessing operational data from electronic aircraft systems, including selective monitoring, displaying parameters in near real-time, collecting and storing, and transmitting data to the ground.

Era Helicopters Opts for Sagem's Flight Data Analysis Software
Era Helicopters has selected Sagem Avionics' AGS (analysis ground station) in-house software for its FOQA (flight operational quality assurance) program.

Two More Business Aircraft Service Firms Contract for PASSUR Tools
JetDirect, a private firm with charter operations and FBO (fixed base operation) facilities across the U.S., and TAG Aviation, a large U.S. charter operator, will use several Megadata PASSUR applications to improve their customer services.

 

NASA Awards Funds for Runway Incursion Sensor Research
NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate awarded approximately $138,000 to the Research Triangle Institute to work on airborne runway incursion sensors.

 

GE to Acquire Smiths Aerospace
The General Electric Company has agreed to purchase U.K.-based Smiths Aerospace for $4.8 billion in cash.  The deal is subject to approval by Smiths Group shareowners as well as customary regulatory reviews.

 

ARINC Wants to Expand Market for Remote Check-Ins
ARINC has formed of a new Remote Passenger Services Group to manage and market its Internet-enabled remote passenger check-in technologies in the Americas in an effort to expand their use.
