FAA Publishes Final "Comprehensive" ETOPS Rule
The FAA has published what it calls "a comprehensive final rule" for ETOPS (extended-range twin-engine operations) that sets uniform standards for all commercial passenger aircraft that fly routes more than three hours from an airport.

NAV Portugal Designated as Country's ANSP for Single European Sky
NAV Portugal has been designated by Portugal's Minister of Transport as that country's ANSP (air navigation service provider) for air traffic control, AIS (aeronautical information system), and CNS (communications, navigation and surveillance) services, in accordance with the Single European Sky regulations.

Trinity House RFP Would Modify Loran Stations to Backup GPS
Trinity House issued a RFP (request for proposals) in December for an enhanced loran (long range navigation) system, dubbed eLoran, which would serve as a backup to GPS.  Some believe this action could increase pressure on the FAA to do the same.

DOT Seeking Comments on Using Loran as GPS Backup
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking industry comments to help it decide whether to continue to operate loran-C and use it as a backup to GPS.  The department is coordinating with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the process.

Boeing Business Jets to Offer Rockwell Collins EVS
Boeing Business Jets says it will offer its customers a Rockwell Collins' EVS (enhanced vision system) that should be certified by early 2008.

 

Beijing to Use ERA Multilateration System to Monitor Parallel Runways
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) will deploy ERA's wide-area multilateration technology to provide parallel runway monitoring as well as surface management at Beijing's international airport (PEK).

 

UPS to Use Teledyne Controls' Integrated Data Management on B-747-400s
UPS will install Teledyne Controls' iDMU (integrated data management unit) on its new B-747-400 freighters to monitor the condition of their systems and to record in-flight data.

 

ARINC Partnering with SecureTRANSIT for Border Control Notifications
ARINC has agreed to a partnership that allows it to integrate SecureTRANSIT's APIS (advance passenger information system) software into its ARINC Direct operational applications to make it easier for its business aviation customers to submit government-required crew and passenger data for flights entering or leaving the United States, Canada or Mexico.

FAA Issues NRPM to Require Greater Aircraft Protection from Explosives
The FAA has issued NPRM (notice of proposed rulemaking) to implement new requirements governing the design of transport category airplanes that would provide "greater protection of the cabin, flightdeck, and cargo compartments from the detonation of explosive or incendiary devices, penetration by projectiles, and intrusion by unauthorized persons."

 

NTSB Investigating Runway Incursion at Denver
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) says it is investigating a runway incursion at Denver's  international airport on January 5th, where a Frontier A319 was forced to make a missed approach at a low altitude to avoid a Key Lime Metroliner on the landing runway.

NTSB Sites Inadequacy of Controller's Low-Altitude Alarm in Accident
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board cited "the inadequate design and function" of the airport facility's MSAW (minimum safe altitude warning system) as one of the contributing factors in a Mitsubishi MU-2B-60's fatal ground collision four miles short of the runway at Centennial Airport, near Denver, on August 4, 2005.

MAXjet, Aeroflot and Kenya Airways have chosen digEcor portable IFE (in flight equipment).  MAXjet started using the digEplayer on their international flights in late December, and Aeroflot and Kenya, will put them on selected flights starting this month.
