America West to Retrofit 87 Aircraft with Honeywell's EGPWS
America
West Airlines will retrofit 87 of its B-737s, B-757s and A320s
with
Honeywell's EGPWS (Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System).
Approximately 50 of the newest aircraft in America West's fleet was delivered with
factory-installed terrain alerting and warning systems.
Honeywell's EGPWS compares aircraft location, as determined by the
airplane’s navigation system, with a worldwide terrain
database. It provides pilots an electronic map of nearby
terrain, color-coded according to terrain elevation. The system
also sounds an audible alert if the aircraft comes within
approximately one minute’s flying time of terrain when not in a
landing configuration.
America
West's retrofit program is designed to meet the FAA’s 2005
deadline for TAWS installation.
