    Training  May 2004

News Summary

CAE Developing New Simulation-Based Training Tools

CAE plans to introduce new training courses for the Citation X, Legacy, Hawker 800XP and Falcon 900B/EX, using its Simfinity simulation-based training tools.  Courses will be offered at CAE SimuFlite’s facility in Dallas/Fort Worth, and at Emirates-CAE Flight Training in Dubai.

CAE Simfinity uses a high-fidelity integrated three-dimensional procedures trainer and a two-dimensional virtual simulator to give pilots practical experience with airframe systems, engine and avionics before they train on a full-flight simulator.

CAE’s global network of training centers already offer simulation-based classroom training for the Gulfstream IV, the Gulfstream V, the Boeing Business Jet, and most recently the Falcon 2000.  05-26-2004.

FAA Approves Common Pilot Type Rating on Four Gulfstream Models

The FAA has approved common pilot type ratings for Gulfstream’s new long-range G450 along with the G550, G500 and G350.  Europe’s Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) is expected to announce a similar ruling in the near future.

Additionally, since the G550 and GV already share the same type rating, a GV rating will apply to the other new Gulfstream models as well, if the pilot completes a five-day “differences” course that includes instruction on Gulfstream’s new PlaneView flight deck.  Furthermore, GV pilots who aren’t already qualified on Gulfstream’s  Enhanced Vision System (EVS) will need to complete 14 hours of training on the HUD (head-up display) and the EVS to fly the G550 and G450, both of which include EVS as standard equipment.

Gulfstream says this training is offered at FlightSafety International in Savannah, which is Gulfstream’s preferred provider of crew training services.  05-25-2004.

Dassault Partnering with CAE SimuFlite for Falcon Training

Dassault Falcon and CAE SimuFlite say they will develop and deliver a technical training curriculum for maintenance technicians on Falcon 50/50EXs, Falcon 900/900EXs and Falcon 2000/2000EXs, beginning the second half of this year. The program will extend to earlier Falcon models beginning next year.  05-22-2004.

CAE SimuFlite Launches Citation X Technical Training Program

CAE says its SimuFlite technical training program for the Cessna Citation X will be available this fall at its Dallas/Fort Worth training center, any of CAE’s worldwide training centers or at the operator’s location.

CAE SimuFlite’s Citation X Level D-qualified full-flight simulator allows maintenance technicians to get hands-on training for engine run ups and taxiing, as well as systems operations in a fully optioned Citation X cockpit, featuring, among other things, a Honeywell SPZ-7600 digital autoflight control system, Universal UNS-1D flight management systems with global positioning navigation, EGPWS, TCAS II and moving map display.

Initial training duration is 10 days while the recurrent program lasts five days.  05-20-2004.

Canadian Government Invests in Advanced ATC Simulator Development

The Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC) is investing $4-million to help develop advanced simulator technologies for training ATC personnel who control aircraft in both domestic and oceanic airspace.

The investment is part of a $13.6-million research and development initiative being undertaken by Quebec’s Adacel Inc. to develop advanced air traffic control simulation and air traffic management technologies.

Some of the new technologies being investigated include voice recognition-based applications, modeling and real-time graphics to help manage air space through visualization.  The purpose is to support the new communications, navigation and surveillance technologies being introduced into the world’s airspace and the new traffic management systems that will compliment them.  05-18-2004.

Qantas Names CAE as Its Preferred 380 Simulator Supplier

CAE says Qantas has chosen it to be the airline’s preferred supplier for a suite of A380 integrated training devices, including a full-flight simulator.

This “preferred supplier nomination,” which is subject to final agreement on the terms and conditions, would have the airline taking delivery of the simulator and two associated Simfinity integrated training devices in June 2006.

Last June, Airbus purchased two A380 full-flight simulators, along with CAE’s Simfinity three-dimensional maintenance/flight training devices (M/FTDs), software licenses for desktop and laptop trainers, and briefing-debriefing stations.

Qantas has ordered 12 A380s, with the first being introduced in 2006.  05-11-2004.

CAE Expands Its Training Network in Latin America

CAE has signed a 10-year services agreement (based on expected simulator usage) with LAN to provide training on B-737-200 and A320 full-flight simulators beginning this year. A similar contract with LAN for B-767-300ER simulator training will commence in the last quarter of 2005.

The training will take place at LAN’s center in Santiago, Chile, which CAE has agreed to acquire.

In addition to the B-737-200 simulator currently housed in LAN’s facility, CAE will install a used A320 device and a used B-767-300ER machine, all of which will be used for both LAN’s and third-party customers’ requirements. The A320 simulator will form part of the CAE-Airbus training cooperative.  05-08-2004.
