VDLM2 Is Fully Operational In Central Mexico
A VDLM2 (VHF digital link
mode 2) datalink system is now fully operational in Central Mexico. Testing
of the system, which was deployed by ARINC and Mexico's aviation authority
SENEAM near Mexico City, was completed in late 2006.
ARINC says a number of
international carriers equipped with VDL avionics, including American
Airlines, Air France, Continental Airlines, Lan Chile, and Sun Country are
already using the new service. It expects other carriers to follow later
this year.
According to ARINC,
demand for VDLM2, which is more capable and robust than the ubiquitous ACARS
(aircraft communications addressing and reporting system) is accelerating
worldwide as newer VDL-equipped aircraft enter service, and as airlines
adopt new data-hungry flight applications. ARINC provides VDLM2 coverage in
North America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific, and has delivered air traffic
control communications over VDLM2 in northern Europe. Besides its new
service in Mexico, ARINC's North American VDLM2 coverage extends across the
U.S. and Lower Canada.
An ARINC spokesman said
his company expects to work with SENEAM on additional VDLM2 coverage in
regions such as Cancun, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. 04-25-2007. |
