U of Illinois Aerospace Department to Help Develop Supersonic Technology
The University of Illinois Aerospace Engineering Department will help Rolls-Royce Deutschland and
Gulfstream Aerospace conduct research on reducing the noise of a supersonic
business jet flying over land.
Current FAA regulations prohibit supersonic flight over land primarily because of the noise such flights
have produced up to now.
The
Illinois researchers will focus how on the engine's intake and exhaust
systems which can be designed to help reduce the aircraft's sonic boom and increase
its propulsive efficiency. Specifically, their research will examine the
engine's inlet, the by-pass air that travels around the outside of the engine's
core, and the acoustics of the exhaust system. 12-19-2007. |
