Tokyo's Narita to Get LMCT Windshear System with Basis Technology's Help
The Japanese Meteorological Agency will install a Lockheed Martin Coherent Technologies' (LMCT) WindTracer Doppler Lidar
((light detection and ranging) windshear warning system at the Tokyo
International Airport in Narita early next year with the help of Basis
Technology.
The system was
installed at Tokyo's other international airport, Haneda, earlier this year.
WindTracer detects dangerous wind activity, such as sudden changes in wind
speed and direction over a relatively short distance, and provides an advanced
warning of the hazard so that it can be avoided. It has been successfully used by
airports to continuously scan approach and departure corridors, enabling
controllers to offer precise, timely information to pilots during the low-speed,
low-altitude phases of flight where airplanes are more vulnerable to these
phenomena.
Basis Technology modified WindTracer's software code to process and display
foreign text correctly, in this case Japanese. It also translated WindTracers
user interface to Japanese, and provided on-site testing and engineering.
With the modified code, LMCT is now able to easily localize WindTracer's interface for other languages
and countries, which the two companies believe should facilitate the use of the
system at other airports worldwide. 12-16-2007. |
