Thales UK Partnering with Inmarsat on Satellite Broadband Service

Thales UK has agreed to distribute Inmarsat's BGAN (broadband global area network) mobile satellite broadband service under the branding names of BeSecure, BeFree, BeGlobal, and BeHeard.  This will be Thales UK's first satellite communications service offering.

The service, which should be fully launched this summer, uses portable, lightweight satellite terminals and the Inmarsat-4 satellite network to allow any laptop PC with a BGAN unit and a telephone handset or headset to be connected for simultaneous voice calls and data at speeds of up to 492 kbps (kilobits per second).

Thales UK sees this agreement as adding another piece to its communications portfolio, according to Simon Tudge, who is heading up this part of the company's aerospace business.  02-20-2007.
