Telenor Satellite Services Previews New Secure Networking Filter
Telenor Satellite
Services, a subsidiary of Telenor of Norway, is previewing "the first in a
series of secure networking value added services to enable users to more
effectively monitor and filter security attacks and unwanted Internet
content over satellite communications."
Telenor currently
anticipates commercial launch of the service, called
Terralink Secure, during this year's second quarter.
The service is designed
to stop unwanted content coming from the Internet to a user's satellite
terminal before it enters the satellite portion of the end-to-end
connection. Telenor says this differs from firewalls and security programs
running on the user's PC, which can stop this traffic only after it has
passed over the satellite portion of the connection, so it makes for a more
efficient use of the satellite link.
Arvid Johannessen, who
directs Telenor's product development and innovation group, said "that while
managed security services are becoming very common for terrestrial Internet
service providers, Terralink Secure is one of the first services of its kind
to protect customers' satellite communications in the same manner."
