TSA to Test More Capable Security X-Ray Machines
The U.S.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) plans to begin testing new X-ray
machines with new technology that includes multi-view and high definition to
enhance their explosive detection capability.
The TSA's announcement of the tests was
made in conjunction with contract awards to L3 Communications, Smiths Detection and Rapiscan Systems, which call for each
vendor to lease seven of their AT (advance technology) X-ray machines to TSA for
testing purposes.
According
to the TSA, the new machines are able to display a much clearer and more
detailed image that is currently available, and will provide lower maintenance,
and a smaller profile than are available with current-generation systems.
Importantly, the new devices should be able to be upgraded with software changes
as well. "These new X-ray technologies are built on systems not unlike
computers millions of people use every day," said Mike Golden, the TSA's chief
technology officer. "They are totally upgradeable and programmable."
The units will be
appraised over several weeks until one or more vendors are chosen for a wider
deployment, the TSA says. 07-16-2007. |
