Southwest to Install GE Aviation FMS on B-737 Classics
Southwest Airlines has awarded GE Aviation, formerly Smiths Aerospace, a
contract to provide a FMS (flight management system) upgrade for 200 B-737
Classics in order to accommodate its plans for RNP (required navigation
performance). Deliveries of the new systems will take place in 2008 and 2009.
GE Aviation says its
FMS
system
can control an aircraft's track to an accuracy of 10 meters and the time
of arrival to within 10 seconds to any point in the flight plan, which is
required to achieve Southwest's goal for RNP-tailored-path benefits, including
the ability to consistently fly shorter routes and idle-thrust descents.
Southwest is in the process of developing RNP capability and procedures for its
entire fleet, with the
support of Naverus.
John Ferrie, GE Aviation's president of systems, said, "Our system is a key part of [Southwest's] plans to
conduct RNP operations, and allows them to realize significant cost savings with
lowered fuel consumption while simultaneously benefiting the environment with
reduced emissions." 10-23-2007. |
