Six States and Eurocontrol Meet on New European Airspace Structure
Six European states along
with their ANSPs (air navigation service providers) and Eurocontrol have met
formally for the first time to discuss how they collectively will create
functional airspace blocks (FABs) to improve airspace capacity over the
continent.
The European Commission
has called for FABs to be part of the
Single European Sky that envisions traffic flows to be organized
according to best routes rather than national boundaries. Belgium,
France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland and Eurocontrol
are currently studying how a large common airspace block, to be called FAB
Europe Central, would accomplish this goal.
The airspace over these
six countries, located in the core of Europe, is one of the busiest and most
complex in the world, and contains most of Europe's largest airports.
