Singapore Rolls Out New "Productivity Suite" for Working Passengers
Singapore Airlines is
introducing a "productivity suite" in its B-777-300s that will allow passengers
to continue working after aircraft boarding without having to power up their
laptop computer.
The suite runs Sun
Microsystems'
StarOffice that includes word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and
other common office software. It is being launched by Singapore as part of
its next generation KrisWorld IFE (in-flight entertainment system).
Wong Heng Chew, the
managing director of Singapore Sun Microsystems, said that while today's
heightened security sometimes limits use of laptops during flight, StarOffice will allow passengers to access and work on their information in
an open, secure and freely available fashion independent of any vendor or
file formats.
StarOffice software
supports an increasing number of file formats like Open Document Format and
Microsoft Office, which will allow their access through a single application
with a USB (universal serial bus) storage device, according to Mr. Chew.
