Sensis and Honeywell Test More Capable Runway Incursion Alerting System
ATW Daily News reports that Sensis Corporation and Honeywell have tested a runway-incursion protection
system that would simultaneously alert the pertinent pilots and ground
controllers in the event of such a potential occurrence.
According to
ATW's report (8-15-2007), the system tested by the two companies
communicates incursion alerts from ASDE-X (airport surface detection
equipment-model X) surveillance radar to an aircraft's TCAS (traffic alert and
collision avoidance system) via mode-S datalink. The pilots would be provided
with audible alerts initially, but visual representations are a future
possibility.
The system was tested in May at Syracuse, New York, where the FAA has an ASDE-X test facility.
The alerting system requires no hardware modification to either ASDE-X or TCAS, according to Sensis and
Honeywell officials. 08-16-2007. |
