Sensis ASDE-X Commissioned at Washington's Dulles
Washington Dulles has become the twelfth airport to get an operational Sensis' ASDE-X (airport surface
detection equipment - model x) system. The FAA is deploying ASDE-X at 35 U.S. airports.
ASDE-X fuses ground surveillance data from radar, ADS-B (automatic dependent
surveillance - broadcast) and the multilateration of transponder signals, to
provide air traffic controllers with a real-time, location and identity
information of all aircraft and vehicles on the airport surface. In addition,
the system's Safety Logic conflict detection and alerting technology, uses
algorithms to detect and alert controllers of potential collisions between
aircraft and vehicles.
Besides Dulles, ASDE-X is now operational at Milwaukee, Providence, Orlando, Houston's Hobby, Atlanta, St.
Louis, Bradley International at Windsor Locks, Connecticut, Seattle, Louisville, Charlotte, and Chicago O'Hare.
Outside the U.S., Sensis
A-SMGCS (advanced-surface movement guidance and control system), a somewhat
similar system to ASDE-X, which fuses data from several surveillance sources to
provide a picture of the airport surface, is being implemented at several major
airports. It is already operational at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi, and is being
deployed in Australia at Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, and at Hong Kong.
