SITA Qualifies Avionica's satLINK Iridium Communications Module
Avionica says SITA has qualified its Iridium satellite-based data communications module for use on the
SITA ACARS (aircraft communications addressing and reporting system) network.
According to Avionica,
satLINK is the first Iridium-based communications product to process SITA's
VAC (validation, assessment and qualification), meaning that satLINK-equipped
aircraft will now have "truly global messaging coverage in addition to voice communications."
"No other system can provide equivalent worldwide coverage and reliability", claims Raul Segredo, Avionica's president.
"Terrestrial VHF (very high frequency) and HF (high frequency) radio-based
networks are unreliable in remote locations and over water, and Inmarsat has no
coverage near the poles...."
Avionica sees satLINK as augmenting if not replacing existing VHF/HF and legacy satcom. "The Iridium constellation is the ATC
messaging backbone of the future," Mr. Segredo asserts.
Mr. Segredo continues: "satLINK is designed to fully integrate into existing and future
commercial avionics suites. The Iridium constellation's architecture requires a
much smaller antenna and far less expensive equipment and installation costs
than an Inmarsat solution. The resulting system is approximately 1/10th the
price of an Inmarsat installation." 11-08-2007. |
