Rolls-Royce Leading Team for "Environmentally Friendly Engine"
A team led by Rolls-Royce has
been developing an "environmentally friendly" full- engine demonstrator that is
scheduled to run next year.
The Environmentally Friendly
Engine (EFE), which is part of the U.K.'s National Aerospace Technology
Strategy, is a demonstration program meant to validate new engine technologies
aimed at reducing noise, fuel burn and emissions.
The program was launched in
2006 and will continue until the end of 2010. Its goal is to make a major
contribution towards achieving industry targets of lowering emissions of CO2 by
50%, NOx by 80% and noise by 50% by 2020, all from a 2000 baseline.
Rolls-Royce's partners include Goodrich Corporation, Bombardier Aerospace,
HS Marston Aerospace and Unison Engine Components, and the universities of
Birmingham, Cambridge, Loughborough, Oxford, Sheffield and Queens, Belfast.
Goodrich's Engine Control and Electrical Power Systems team, headquartered
in Birmingham, U.K, is Rolls-Royce's largest partner on the program and will be
providing the next generation of electronic and fuel system controls for six
engine technology validation runs that will be conducted over the next five
years.
More than half of the
investment in EFE is coming directly from the industry partners, with the
balance being funded by the British government. 07-15-2007. |
