Qantas to Offer Text Connectivity for All Domestic Passengers
Qantas says it will allow its domestic passengers to send and
receive email and SMS (short message service) text messages via their GSM
(global system for mobile) phones or PDAs (personal digital assistants) later
this year.
The Australian airline has been
evaluating the necessary technology on a B-767-300 between April 2007 and
January 2008, which John Borghetti, its executive general manager, described as
a "great success."
AeroMobile developed the onboard system which allows mobile phones and PDAs to be
used to communicate inflight without
interfering with either aircraft systems or ground communication networks. It
worked with Qantas and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), the
Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and other agencies to
ensure the system operated in accordance with Australian requirements.
