Qantas Permitted to Conduct Limited Evaluation of Inflight Mobile Phones
The Australian
Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) will allow Qantas to conduct a
limited evaluation of GSM (global system for mobile communications) mobile
phones and GPRS (general packet radio service) personal devices on one of
its aircraft for up to 12 months.
However, Qantas has
decided to commence the evaluation - which will be conducted only on
domestic Australian routes - with email and SMS (short message service) text
only, disabling voice services, and only for three months.
A Qantas spokesman said
once this stage is completed the airline will decide if voice calls should
be tested. "We're just starting this so we'll see how it goes."
The carrier
first announced its plans to conduct such a trial last August.
Telstra, Panasonic
Avionics and AeroMobile will be part of the exercise. 04-23-2007. |
