New Zealand, U.S. and Australia Agree to Accelerate Ways to Reduce Emissions
Airways New Zealand, New Zealand's ANSP (air navigation services provider), has signed a trilateral
agreement with the FAA and Airservices Australia to accelerate the development
of air traffic control procedures which the parties believe will reduce
aviation's environmental footprint, while increasing airspace capacity and efficiency.
The ASPIRE (Asia and South Pacific initiative to reduce emissions) agreement, which was signed this week at
the Singapore Aviation Summit, aims to provide a regional platform to showcase
the region's leadership in global aviation emissions reductions to ensure that,
as aviation grows, its environmental impacts are reduced over time.
Airways New Zealand CEO Ashley Smout said the agreement is a significant step towards closer regional
collaboration to continue leading the world in global aviation emissions reduction.
An important part of that collaboration, according to Mr. Smout, will be a commitment to "accelerate the
development of operational procedures which will further reduce the
environmental footprint of aircraft in our combined airspace for all phases of
flight, from gate to gate."
These procedures include RNP (required navigation performance), CDA (continuous decent approach), UPR (user
preferred routes), dynamic airborne rerouting and reduced (30/30 nautical mile)
horizontal separation in oceanic areas. 02-23-2008. |
