NATCA Gives Its Okay to ASDE-X
The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) says it's looking forward to the commissioning
of ASDE-X (airport surface detection equipment - model X) at Chicago O'Hare and Charlotte later this month.
ASDE-X, which was developed by Sensis
Corporation for the FAA, uses a combination of surface movement radar,
transponder multilateration and ADS-B (automatic dependent
surveillance-broadcast) sensors to provide air traffic controllers with a
picture of the location and identity of aircraft and vehicles on the airport
surface. The system has already been certified, and controllers are already
using ASDE-X in an IOC (initial operating capability) mode at both O'Hare and
Charlotte.
The system was introduced at O'Hare about two years ahead of the original schedule, after the FAA received
pressure from a number of lawmakers who expressed concerns about surface safety
at the airport. O'Hare formerly used AMASS (airport movement area safety
system), which experienced performance deficiencies under certain conditions
including heavy rain.
Patrick Forrey, NATCA's president, said, "NATCA supports the modernization of the air traffic control
system and the ASDE-X program." And Ben Murray, NATCA's facility representative
at Charlotte's tower, said the installation of the system there "has proceeded
very well with just a few issues which are common with this type of complex
deployment." 08-16-2007. |
