More ADS-B Projects Could Emerge in Asia-Pacific
Airports Fiji is releasing a registration of interest for
ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast)
and Airservices Australia is seeking to expand its existing ADS-B project to
demonstrate applications other than surveillance.
According to a story by Emma Kelly, written for
Flight International, Fiji wants a network of ADS-B ground stations and
connections to the air traffic management center at Nadi to provide surveillance
capability throughout Fiji and in the Nadi FIR (flight information region).
Meanwhile, Airservices Australia wants to demonstrate how ADS-B can benefit additional elements of
Australia's aviation community before implementing the technology below flight
level 300. Airservices is already installing ADS-B ground stations to offer
ADS-B-based surveillance above FL300 in Australia, and wants to extend the
program to lower altitudes, but some - particularly among general aviation -
haven't supported this initiative.
Airservices says the demonstrations would equip up to 200 regional and GA aircraft with different
types of avionics that would include airborne ADS-B-based traffic displays,
ground-based tracking and monitoring. The idea is to show operational improvements
through surveillance-based air traffic services, and local traffic
advisory services, while ensuring safety. 07-23-2007. |
