MDA to Help FAA Develop New Instrument Procedures
The FAA has awarded
MacDonald, Dettailer and Associates (MDA) a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract,
with a ceiling of approximately $11.8 million to begin developing a new
Instrument Procedure Development System (IPDS) to help improve civilian and
military flight-route design practices, for both en-route and terminal
airspace.
MDA says the contract follows the program's definition phase in which
it, along with the FAA and the U.S. Department of Defense, defined the
system and the associated business processes.
IPDS is part of a joint
initiative between the FAA and the DoD to first create automated tools to
modernize flight route design practices in order to facilitate greater air
traffic volumes and to harmonize military and civilian air navigation in the
long term. This first development phase will provide the FAA and the DoD
with the capability to design terminal area flight routes that take
advantage of modern navigation equipment to improve terminal airspace usage.
