Lufthansa to Install Honeywell's Runway Awareness and Advisory System
Honeywell says
Lufthansa Airlines has decided to use its RAAS (runway awareness and
advisory system).
RAAS works in concert
with Honeywell's EGPWS (enhanced ground proximity warning system) to
improve situational awareness during airport operations and reduce
runway incursions. The system compares the aircraft's GPS-derived
location against a database to provide aural advisories to the flight
crew when:
-
Their airplane is
entering a runway and when their aircraft is on a runway.
-
Their airplane
sits on a runway for an extended period of time.
-
They
inadvertently attempt a takeoff from a taxiway.
-
They take-off
from a short runway or approach to land on a short runway.
It also calls out
distance remaining during rejected takeoffs or long landings, and it has an
optional advisory for identifying the runway when on final approach for
a landing.
Honeywell says
Lufthansa will begin to install the system on its aircraft during this
year's second quarter. The final fleet configuration hasn't been
announced. 01-12-2006.
