L-3 Will Upgrade NEXRAD

The National Weather Service (NWS) has awarded L-3 Enterprise IT Solutions a $43 million contract to upgrade the U.S. NEXRAD (next generation weather radar) program along with Baron Services, which supplies weather radar systems.

NEXRAD is a system of 171 weather radars positioned across the U.S., and at some overseas locations that collects data on local weather phenomena, which are used to predict convective activity. This contract includes converting the radars to dual-polarization Doppler capability, in order to help NWS meteorologists measure precipitation more accurately.

As part of the upgrade, L-3 Enterprise IT Solutions will deliver systems engineering, integration, field installation services and program management.  Baron Services will design, develop and produce the NEXRAD dual-polarization radar system kits.  10-08-2007.
