JetBlue Offering Limited Free In-Flight E-mail and Instant Messaging
JetBlue Airways is offering free, but limited, in-flight e-mail and instant messaging services using an
onboard wireless network on one of its A320s, starting today.
Customers flying on BetaBlue, the airline's first aircraft equipped with an onboard wireless network from
LiveTV, can now use Wi-Fi enabled laptops and smartphones to stay connected.
Regular Web surfing and e-mail attachments won't be permitted because of bandwidth constraints, and
Yahoo will be the only available service provider.
The airline is using a wireless spectrum that LiveTV bought from the Federal Communications Commission
last year for $7 million. Because the service doesn't use cellular signals, it
doesn't violate any federal regulations. 12-11-2007. |
