Gulfstream Flies Enhanced and Synthetic Vision Together
Gulfstream Aerospace says it has flown an experimental G450 test aircraft using a SVS (synthetic vision
system) and an EVS (enhanced vision system) together, which the company
described as an historic first.
The dual navigation capability combines the three-dimensional terrain images of Gulfstream's SV-PFD
(synthetic vision-primary flight display), using data from a Honeywell EGPWS
(enhanced ground proximity warning system) and the FLIR (forward-looking
infrared) images of its EVS II second generation enhanced vision system,
displayed on a HUD (head-up display). All are integrated into Gulfstream's
enhanced
PlaneView flight deck.
The two systems were evaluated during three days of flight testing in September when Gulfstream and
Honeywell experimental test pilots flew approaches at airports in nine American
western states, including some with the most demanding mountainous
environments.
Pres Henne, Gulfstream's senior vice president, programs, engineering and test, said, "The effect of
using both systems simultaneously provides an unmatched magnitude of pilot
situational awareness and a flight path that is always visible regardless of the
conditions outside the cockpit window."
Gulfstream expects to certify its next generation EVS II later this year, and says its SV-PFD is scheduled for
FAA certification by the end of the year as well, and should be available to
customers in the second quarter of 2008. 11-12-2007. |
