FAA's First Flight Service Network HUB Operational
The FAA's first of three
flight service network hubs is now operational at Washington, D.C. The
others will be in Prescott, Arizona, and Dallas.
The
FS21 (flight services for the 21st Century) hubs are automated flight
service stations, built by Lockheed Martin, designed to streamline the flow
of information to and from pilots by allowing all flight service stations to
share the same set of nationwide data.
The facilities are
staffed with specialists that provide traditional flight-service-station
services such as weather briefings, in-flight information, flight plan
filing, clearances, and other services to pilots, as was done before.
As the Washington hub,
which is located near the Dulles airport, came online, one of the FAA's
"heritage" sites, the Anniston Flight Service Station, in Oxford, Alabama,
ceased operations, and had it calls redirected to the new FS21. Additional
flight service stations will have their calls transferred to the new
hubs as the transition continues. 02-26-2007. |
