FAA Wants Better Taxiway Markings at All Airports to Improve Safety

The FAA is proposing to extend its enhanced standards for taxiway centerline makings to all certificated airports to reduce the risk of runway incursions.  Simultaneously, the agency also is recommending regular recurrent driver training for all persons with access to the movement area and ramp areas at certificated airports.

There are 567 certificated airports in the U.S. and more than 300 are in some stage of voluntarily adopting the standard. The FAA already requires 75 medium to large airports, with more than 1.5 million enplanements, have enhanced taxiway centerline markings by June 30, 2008, and most have already completed the work.

The new requirements apply to all airports certificated under Part 139 of the Federal Air Regulations, and are also mandatory for airport projects receiving federal funds under the Airport Grant Assistance and the Passenger Facility Charge programs.

Details can be found in Draft AC (advisory circular) No. 150/5340-1J Standard Airport Markings and Draft AC No. 150/5210-20 Ground Vehicle Operations on Airports, located on the the FAA Website.  More information can also be found at http://www.faa.gov/news/fact_sheets/.

The due date for public comments is February 26. 01-08-2008.
