FAA Issues NPRM on Icing Detection System
The FAA has issued a NPRM (notice of proposed rulemaking) that would require manufacturers of newly certified
transport-category aircraft to incorporate an ice-detection system.
The
proposal follows a
recommendation from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board that
aircraft deicing boots should be activated immediately upon the first
indication of airframe icing.
The proposed rule would create FAR Part 25.1419 that would require manufacturers to include a system that either
alerted the crew to the first sign of airframe ice, or alerted the crew to
the presence of conditions conducive to icing.
Following such an alert, the aircraft's
deicing system would have to either automatically and continuously activate
the deicing system or alert the crew to do it.
