FAA Clarifies Back-Up Policy for EFB Electronic Charts
The FAA has issued an advisory circular which confirms that electronic charts used in either installed or
portable displays, such as EFBs (electronic flight bags), can be used in lieu of
traditional paper charts, and that no back-up information is required - although
it's recommended.
According to
Advisory Circular 91-78, EFBs and other ECDs (electronic chart displays) can
be used during all phases of flight operations in lieu of paper reference
material when the displayed information meets the following criteria:
-
The components
or systems onboard the aircraft which display pre-composed or interactive
information are the functional equivalent of the paper reference material.
-
The information
being used for navigation or performance planning is current, up-to-date, and
valid.
The AC suggests that a back-up
source of secondary information is recommended, but not required, and if
provided, it can be either in an electronic format or traditional paper. 08-05-2007. |
