FAA Approves Honeywell's Integrated Primary Flight Display System
The FAA has granted Honeywell a TSO (technical standard order) for its IPFD (integrated
primary flight display) that gives a pilot a synthetic real-time, 3D
representation of terrain and obstacles on an aircraft's primary flight displays.
The
IPFD integrates existing flightdeck information with HUD (head-up display)
symbology, giving the flight crew an accurate representation of the outside
world, which is synthetically generated from Honeywell's EGPWS (enhanced ground
proximity warning system) terrain database.

Bob Smith, Honeywell's vice president for advanced technology, calls the IPFD "a
game changer" when it comes to increasing pilot situation awareness.
Honeywell is developing other new functionality for the IPFD that includes 3D
airport maps of entire airport surfaces, with runways and taxiways clearly and
accurately depicted irrespective of weather conditions and time of day. These
functions are being tested in simulators and on Honeywell aircraft, and
Honeywell engineers are gathering feedback from pilots on how to best
incorporate them into the IPFD family.
Mr. Smith also said that Honeywell is continuing to research other IPFD
capabilities, including the incorporation of enhanced vision.
Earlier this year, Honeywell said it is developing the technology needed to expand its synthetic vision
portfolio for potential rotor wing applications, and is accumulating flight test
hours to further its design and development. 02-25-2008. |
