FAA Approves Chelton Flight Systems' Synthetic Vision EFIS for Bell 427
The FAA has granted Keystone Helicopter Corporation a STC (supplemental type certificate) permitting installation of a Chelton Flight
Systems' Synthetic Vision EFIS (electronic flight information system) in Bell 427s.
Chelton's EFIS
uses 3D graphic technology to translate the terrain ahead of and around the
helicopter into a visual picture - hence synthetic vision - to help the
pilot "see" the aircraft's position in relation to its surroundings
regardless of darkness or weather conditions.

The system includes GPS with WAAS (wide area augmentation system), a moving map with displayed terrain, and an optional
display of weather and traffic. Chelton says the system also fulfills the
FAA's TAWS (terrain awareness warning system) mandate for fixed-wing turbine
aircraft, including H-TAWS (helicopter terrain awareness and warning system
), and is compatible with NVG (night vision goggle) equipment.
The
Keystone
Bell 427 STC will be available in a standard, two-screen system with a PFD
(primary flight display) and MFD (multi-function display).
Other Chelton EFIS helicopter STC installations include the Bell 204, 205, 206, 210, and 407, the Eurocopter
AS 350/355, the EC 120B and the MD520N. Another for the MD902 will be
available soon. 09-20-2007. |
