Europe to Validate Cockpit Traffic Situation Display Applications

Eurocontrol along with its partners Airbus, DSNA and Sofréavia, are commencing a project to evaluate the use of ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast) to display nearby traffic information to pilots in real time to improve their in-flight situational awareness.

The CRISTAL-AWAS (airborne traffic situational awareness) project is meant to validate the acceptability of the application, as well how it advances both airborne and airport surface operations.  ATSAW's advocates believe if pilots have easy-to-interpret information about surrounding traffic - both in the air and on the airport surface - safety will be enhanced, and eventually capacity and efficiency can be improved.

CRISTAL is a collection of ground and airborne surveillance application validation projects being carried out as part of Eurocontrol's CASCADE program.  01-19-2006.
