Europe Launches "Clean-Sky" Research Program
Europe has officially launched a seven-year, private-public research program, known as the Clean Sky Joint
Technology Initiative (JTI), whose goal is to develop "breakthrough"
technologies that will reduce the adverse environmental effects of aviation,
while strengthening the competiveness of Europe's aeronautics industry.
According to the program's
Website, the JTI was created by the European Commission to allow the implementation of large-scale, long-term
projects, envisioned by its Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), which are of such
scale that they will require substantial investment from both public and private sources.
The program's partners include a wide range of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), universities, and
research centers, as well as aviation industry companies, such as Airbus, Alenia,
Dassault Aviation, Eurocopter, Rolls Royce, Saab, Safran and Thales. As of now,
86 organizations in 16 countries, 54 industries, 15 research centers, and 17
universities are part of the team.
Its current budget is
€1.6 billion. 02-06-2008. |
