Eurocontrol Offering Air-Ground Communications Safety Toolkit Eurocontrol has launched a new toolkit meant to reduce the number of runway incursions and flight level "busts" (failure to level off at assigned altitudes) by improving air-ground communications. The toolkit, dubbed ALLCLEAR?, uses a software interface that facilitates and encourages people to communicate key messages more clearly. The kit includes online training material, videos and checklists to help controllers and pilots avoid errors such as call sign confusion, read-back or hear-back omissions, loss of communications and blocked transmissions. Bengt Collin, Eurocontrol's project manager for the initiative, notes that "Air-ground communication breakdown is very often a contributory factor to accidents or near-misses," which is why the toolkit was developed. 10-22-2007. |
