Emirates Airlines to Equip Fleet with Honeywell Runway Safety System
Emirates Airlines will equip its entire Boeing and Airbus fleet with Honeywell's RAAS
(runway awareness and advisory system) to increase its pilot's situational
awareness during taxi, takeoff and landing.
RAAS helps prevent runway incursions and
other safety anomalies by comparing the aircraft's GPS position against a
database of runways to pinpoint the aircraft's location. If warranted, RAAS will
provide aural advisories for a variety of situations including:
-
When entering
a runway and when on a runway.
-
When sitting
on a runway for an extended period of time.
-
An
inadvertent take-off attempt from a taxiway.
-
A take-off
from a short runway or approach to land on a short runway.
-
Runway
distance remaining call-outs during rejected take-off or long landings.
-
An optional
advisory for identifying the runway on final approach to land.
The system works in concert with Honeywell's EGPWS (enhanced ground proximity warning
system).
Delivery will begin in 2008. Emirates 110 aircraft fleet includes B-777s, A330s, 340s and
A310s fleets. 11-15-2007. |
