DOT Seeking Comments on Using Loran as GPS Backup
The U.S. Department of
Transportation (DOT) is seeking industry comments to help it decide whether
to continue to operate loran-C and use it as a backup to GPS. The
department is coordinating with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in
the process.
The DOT says its ultimate
decision could be to decommission the loran-C system, maintain it as
currently configured, or deploy an enhanced loran system.
Issues the DOT is
considering include whether other available GPS backup systems are adequate
for navigation and timing needs, and whether the investments to enhance
loran up to now make it more than a mere GPS backup, but a
system that has complementary GPS capabilities.
Comments must be received
on or before February 7, 2007.
