Clarification: Widerĝe Dash 8-100 Conducts World's First GPS SCAT-1 Approach
An alert reader noted the following in a
recent story regarding a GPS
SCAT-1 approach in Norway:
"The headline sounds good (Widerĝe Dash 8-100 Conducts World's First GPS SCAT-1
Approach), but it's a little misleading. I would have thought you would have
remembered the real first SCAT-1 approach:"
"Continental Debuts Satellite Landing System Washington DC - September 22, 1998
- A new era of commercial aviation began Monday when Continental Airlines
performed the first commercial flight using a revolutionary satellite landing
system."
"Honeywell Inc. and Pelorus Navigation Systems Inc. designed and developed the
SLS-2000 system, which was the only GPS Landing System (GLS) SCAT-1 in the world
at that time that had received all necessary approvals from the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA). The inaugural GLS flight was conducted aboard a
Continental Airlines MD-80, originating in Washington, D.C. The historic
landings were made at Newark and Minneapolis-St. Paul international airports."
Flt Tech Online has changed the headline to read "Widerĝe Dash 8-100 Conducts GPS SCAT-1 Approach." 11-19-2007. |
