CAE Launches New 5000 Series of Full-Flight Simulators
CAE helped mark the
celebration of its 60-year anniversary by launching a new line of
full-flight simulators meant to address the training requirements for highly
used narrow-body aircraft such as the B-737 and the A320, as well as the
business jet market including the emerging VLJs (very light jets).
The Montreal-based
company said its new
5000 Series is a direct result of input from its customer and technical
advisory boards, and its own training instructors. Besides wanting quality,
reliability, fidelity, and cost effectiveness, CAE said its customers wanted
a product that would address specific requirements, including third-party
training, and the emerging MPL (multi-crew pilot license) training programs.
The 5000 Series fits
between the company's
Simfinity line of training devices, its existing, customized Level D
simulator, which has been enhanced and upgraded into its
7000 Series.
CAE is offering the 5000
Series simulators in two models: the 5200, which CAE says "greatly exceeds"
Level-B requirements, and is targeted for recurrent training); and the 5400,
which exceeds Level D standards.
The simulators feature a
standardized design, COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) technologies, personal
computer-based visuals, LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon) projectors,
electric motion and composite components. They were also designed to have a
roomy and ergonomic IOS (instructor operator station), and an expanded NSA
(non-simulated area) based on human-factors analysis.

Launch customers for the
5000 include Lufthansa Flight Training, which has ordered an Airbus A320
model, and Ryanair, which ordered five B-737NG FFSs in October 2006. In
addition, CAE is currently building 5000-Series machines for the A320 and
B-737 that will be deployed within CAE's own global training network early
next year. The 5000 Series will also be used in the CAE-Airbus
pilot-training partnership.
In addition, CAE expects
the 5000 Series will be used in the Embraer-CAE joint venture announced last
October that will provide pilot and ground-crew training to Embraer Phenom
customers.
The new simulators for both
the B-737NG and Airbus A320 will be available in early 2008. List prices
will depend on the aircraft platform and configuration, and will range from C$8
to C$11 million, according to the company. 04-02-2007. |
