Beijing to Use ERA Multilateration System to Monitor Parallel Runways

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) will deploy ERA's wide-area multilateration technology to provide parallel runway monitoring as well as surface management at Beijing's international airport (PEK).

Rannoch Corporation, which acquired ERA in October, believes this is the first time that wide-area multilateration technology will be used for parallel runway monitoring.  Until now only systems which use specially designed electronically scanned radars have been deemed acceptable for PRM (precision runway monitor) purposes.

Both the surface surveillance solution and the parallel runway monitoring will be provided by a network of ERA's passive multilateration surveillance ground stations.  One of the advantages of system is that its sensors can encompass all airport surface maneuvering areas and a future fourth runway that is being planned for PEK.

Rannoch says ERA's multilateration provides higher accuracy, greater update rate, better coverage and improved reliability when compared to conventional radar, and will do so at a much lower initial cost and with lower annual maintenance costs.  01-12-2007.
