BAE Systems Completes First Test of Autonomous Landing System
BAE Systems completed the first test of an autonomous landing system that demonstrated its ability to
enhance pilot vision sufficiently to land with "zero" outside visibility.
The demonstration of
AALC (autonomous approach and landing capability) took place at the U.S. Air
Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California aboard a
C-130H, in simulated visibility environments.
AALC technology fuses millimeter-wave radar and infrared imaging to detect obstacles in a variety of
visibility impediments, including heavy fog, smoke, dust, or snow. The resulting
image overlaid with flight-guidance symbology is displayed to the pilot on a
digital HUD (head-up display).
Clark Freise, BAE Systems' vice president of defense avionics, said the technology could be used on several
types of aircraft, including civil as well as military transports and
helicopters. 12-15-2007. |
