Amsterdam's Schiphol Selects ERA's Vehicle Tracking System

Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport selected a squitter-beacon (SQB) technology from ERA, now a part of Rannoch Corporation, to support the vehicle tracking component of its A-SMGCS (advanced surface movement and guidance control system).

ERA's system uses the vehicle's GPS-based position and spontaneously replies to Mode S interrogations to automatically provide the location and identification of airport vehicles to tower controllers, while operating seamlessly with the existing ground surveillance application.

The selection of ERA by the Dutch air navigation service provider, LVNL, followed a six-month trial period of available vehicle tracking systems that focused mainly on reliability of service in highly obstructed airport areas, and the potential for ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast) transmitting capability.  01-26-2007.
